LEARNING OUTCOMES

After attending Recovery Through Empowerment, you’ll be able to:

  • Biological: Develop further understanding of the pathology of addiction through the lens of biology which will reinforce the concept of addiction as a disease and not a personal or moral failure.

  • Psychological: Expand knowledge on subjective experiences of addiction by exploring the origin of shame on an individual level and learn how the power of shame drives the biological domain toward the expression of substance use disorders.

  • Social: Develop understanding on how social interactions with others influence our biology and our psychology, thus our behaviors or actions towards substance use. Understand how to deconstruct shame-based culture through exploring messages of shame and utilizing group connection to challenge and let go of shame.

  • Spiritual: Explore how spirituality can bolster resilience in the face of chronic illness such as substance use disorders. Learn to define spirituality not by the content of our lives but by the experiences of life’s process as we live it in the “here and now”.

  • Experiential: Expand awareness of how one’s environment can influence the development of a substance use disorder. Understand how to create positive change in the environment to support recovery.

Cost: Sessions are $30 dollars each for a total of $360 for 12 weeks of attendance. BCBS insurance is accepted

WHY GROUP THERAPY?

Psycho-education substance abuse group therapy offers several advantages, providing a more tailored and evidence-based approach to recovery. Here are some reasons why you might consider group therapy

  • Structured Learning: Psycho-education group therapy incorporates structured educational sessions that equip individuals with a deeper understanding of the psychological and physiological aspects of addiction. This knowledge empowers participants to make informed decisions about their recovery

  • Individualized Approach: Unlike the one-size-fits-all philosophy of AA, psycho-education group therapy can be more individualized. It addresses the unique needs and circumstances of each participant, offering a personalized approach to treatment.

  • Therapeutic Techniques: Psycho-education groups often integrate various therapeutic techniques, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational enhancement therapy. These evidence-based methods help individuals develop coping skills, manage triggers, and address underlying issues contributing to substance abuse.

  • Professional Guidance: Trained therapists or counselors lead psycho-education group therapy, providing professional guidance and support. This ensures that sessions are facilitated by individuals with expertise in addiction treatment, enhancing the quality and effectiveness of the support provided.

  • Broader Scope of Topics: While AA predominantly focuses on the 12-step program, psycho-education group therapy can cover a broader range of topics related to mental health, coping mechanisms, and relapse prevention. This holistic approach can address various aspects of an individual's life and well-being.

  • Open Dialogue: Psychoeducation groups encourage open dialogue and discussion among participants. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes in a supportive environment fosters a sense of community and reduces the feelings of isolation often associated with addiction.
